New uses for old buildings This exhibition presents 19 buildings in the Washington, DC, area that architects have recently reimagined, bringing new life to structures that might otherwise have been doomed to disuse, decay, and ultimately the wrecking ball. Many famous buildings like the Tate Modern in London are successful examples of adaptive reuse. It is a compelling solution to two major problems faced by cities, the ever-increasing requirement of space for the exploding population and preservation of cultural context and historic structures. Although many of the examples are British, the volume also has an international perspective, and includes photos and plans of monastery conversions in Italy, warehouse conversions in San Francisco, and so on. Its historical and cultural heritage should be fully exploited and its inheritance carefully preserved to serve as an inspiration to future generations. There are seventy-three internationally selected examples of significant conversion jobs. While not all existing buildings undergoing a change of use renovation will have historical significance, similar concepts and ideas can be drawn across all existing building conversions.
